    • This was an online bank in the sense that it had zero branches (except for the Spanish bank that bought them). A year ago I'd have worked for them without hesitation - they might go bankrupt, but I can always find another job. It never occurred to me that a company going bankrupt (or as good as) might result in me being out two months' salary. And in the case of a Spanish owned bank I doubt that I'd have the patience to figure out how to sue them, if there was anything left to sue. (My former co-workers and I are "lucky" that the CEO/CTO broke some laws that let us include them on the lawsuit, because there's no way we're getting money out of the corporation.)

Right. That acquisition is a huge part of their current strategy. At the recruiting crap I've been to I got a whole lot of talk from the CEO, CIO, etc about how Capital One really wants to "be the disruptive technology company of banks". The CIO told us that what he wants is for Capital One to be the amazon.com of banks. They've got a ways to go before they get there if you want my opinion though...I think their app sucks, doesn't look nearly as good as Bank of America's, and it isn't on Windows Phone unlike BofA and the other big four. I realize Windows Phone is a small platform but if you wanna be the Online Bank you can't skip anything, in my opinion, and it is important to not be outpaced in any electronic place by any of your competitors.

          • I dread the day that I'm asked to start programming apps - I'm good at back end development, but I don't have the intuition for front end development.

My only foray into front end development was several years ago when I was working for a three man company consisting of the two co-owners and me - no QA at all. I was programming both the front end and back end in VB6 because the database only talked to VB6 and C and I was not about to program a GUI in C. I handed off the program to the client, who complained that if they clicked Button2 and then clicked Button1 then the program crashed. I explained that they were clicking the buttons in the wrong order.

            • Several years ago and you were using vb6 and not .net? wow. How many severals are we talking about?

I'm pretty bad at front end design sorta stuff too. I'm OK with drawing out user interfaces, but not at making them look pretty.

                      • The insurance at the new job starts on Jan 1, so I've just got to avoid being mauled by lions or whatever for the next two weeks

I checked into getting insurance to cover the next two weeks, but every plan starts at the beginning of the month (and I naively assumed that I was getting Cobra otherwise I would have signed up for insurance that started on Dec 1)

My ex-employer said "we canceled the company insurance policy, so we don't have to offer Cobra." They're probably breaking the law by doing this, but what am I going to do - sue them again?

Normally, unemployed bums are inducted into COBRA, a terrorist organization opposed by real American heroes.

                            • Ah, I was assuming that he knew what Cobra was. Cobra is continuing health insurance coverage that you get when you leave a job (quit/fired/laid off, doesn't matter) - you get to keep your group insurance plan, except now you pay the full premium whereas previously your employer was probably paying part/all of the premium. IIRC you can keep this for up to 18 months.

                              • You do of course realize that you were paying the premium before, too, right? It just didn't show up on your paycheck.
