reminds me of my great aunt (not actual relative, just an old serbian lady)
they lived in mississippi (her husband was the guy i was named after, he fought at battle of the bulge)

my mom was little, maybe 9 or ten, they'd go down on the train and spend summers there
one day they were out shopping
my mom didn't know any better
she just tried to drink from a coloreds only
my great aunt stopped her, completely shaken (this is a woman who was in belgrade when the nazis bombed, shelled, and invaded)
told my mom they'd burn crosses on their lawn... or their house completely down

she said those white people in the south were worse than nazis, worse than the communists
she said even the communists treated people with respect (this is a woman who was in a communist prison for 12 years)
