There's nothing wrong with the dream, my friend, the problem lies with the dreamer.

He's named after neither. He's named Malcolm, which is something of a tradition in his mother's family. The Boris Gleb thing was supposed to yank your chains, get you saying "why the hell would you saddle a kid with a name like Boris Gleb," etc. I had a plausible backstory and everything. It was going to be fun. But you bastards had to go and ruin it by being polite about the whole thing. Bah!
I've been fond of the name Boris since watching/listening to Boris Godunov many, many years ago.

His patron saint, and middle name, is Ephrem (the Syrian). Mind you, I'm sure Boris and Gleb sound fine in Russian, but in English, well, Boris is a villain from a bad cartoon involving a moose and a flying squirrel, while Gleb doesn't even sound like a name.

              Ah OK. Ephrem makes sense.
Boris and Gleb are unknown here.

They're Russian princes, always mentioned together. I knew basically nothing about them except that they had goofy-sounding names to an English ear; I thought they were the ones who were attacked by robbers and refused to defend themselves out of Christian principle, but Wiki says they were high-profile assassinations. Maybe I'm thinking of different royal brothers, or a pious tradition that attached to them like St. George and the dragon? Anyway, they're not exactly prominent in America, which is why I had no idea why Onodera was talking about "David Roman." You want a prominent saint in American Orthodoxy, try St. John Maximovitch (American saint), or maybe St. Seraphim of Sarov.

I picked Saint Ephrem because he was a gifted writer and musician in addition to his monastic vocation. I like St. Luke of Simferopol too, but Luke is a common name. The empress Aelia Eudocia is cooler still, but we had a boy, and the wife said "Aelia" sounded too much like Aaliyah, which is very popular for babies right now because it belonged to a singer who died like ten years ago. Oh well.

Yep, they were two sons of Vladimir the Great, two among too many to count, killed either by Sviatopolk (the official version) or by Yaroslav the Wise (conspiracy version) in the succession crysis.

No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.
