  • BRICS Summit

Has not made an appearance here yet?

Brazil's President Dilma Rousseff announced the creation of the bank at a Brics summit meeting in Fortaleza, Brazil on Tuesday.

A new international development bank and multi-billion emergency lending pool will be setup by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa. The move comes at a summit meeting of BRICS leaders in Brazil.

The "New Development Bank" (NDB) is intended to compete with the World Bank and its private lending arm, the International Finance Corporation (IFC), by making it easier and quicker for developing countries to gain access to large-scale financing for infrastructure projects.

The BRICS will also set up a $100 billion (73.5 billion euros) joint US dollar currency reserve pool called the Contingent Reserve Arrangement (CRA), in order to provide emergency cash to BRICS countries faced with short-term currency crises or balance-of-payments problems, Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov has told reporters in Moscow.

The new institution will be based in Shanghai and here is the comment from Vlad:

In the BRICS case we see a whole set of coinciding strategic interests. First of all, this is the common intention to reform the international monetary and financial system. In the present form it is unjust to the BRICS countries and to new economies in general. We should take a more active part in the IMF and the World Bank's decision-making system. The international monetary system itself depends a lot on the US dollar, or, to be precise, on the monetary and financial policy of the US authorities. The BRICS countries want to change this.

The new development bank sounds good but the reality is it appears to be lacking in institutional controls to prevent it from simply becoming a slush fund. Plus China seems to be putting in more money than anyone else so I have little doubt that China will mainly use this as a way to push Chinese exports. "We'll help you finance that project but first you have to sign this agreement to only use Chinese made goods and labor."

Competition is good. Developing countries will make their decisions based upon what is best for their leadership at that time.

We will see how it all works out over next decade, but it is a first organized effort to decouple from western (US/EU) economic policies and other implications.

It is here, quite a big deal in principle, but not much in the press.

Anyway, it's not real until money starts coming out.

Well... that is the next step.

potentially it's quite an interesting development in the medium to long term, but there are (IMO) more important issues to be resolved, such as trade barriers.

That's excellent if you think that elites are doing what's good for the people (but they aren't).

Other than that financial might comes protected by military might, and that's where the BRICS are lacking.
Where they aren't lacking though, is in their despise and contempt for the "developed" world. And that's good.
                Motivation is everything.

Is this supposed to be alarming to people? Oh no, banana republics might find other lenders than the IMF. Big deal.

I was trying to decide whether to comment in this thread or the Lavatory thread.

                        Yep, **** or BRICS.

                              Wish that made sense.
