  • Boris Johnson agrees to be sprayed by a water cannon

London Mayor Boris Johnson offers to be blasted by water cannon to show they’re safe

London Mayor Boris Johnson offered on Wednesday to be sprayed by water cannon to demonstrate that they are safe, after buying the riot control equipment for the capital despite having no permission to use it.

Water cannon were routinely used to disperse crowds during the civil unrest in Northern Ireland but have never been used on mainland Britain, and the issue is contentious.

After a wave of rioting in London in August 2011, police said there could be limited use of water cannon in any future unrest, but the government is still considering the issue.

Despite the lack of official approval, Johnson has agreed the purchase of three second-hand vehicles from the German police, in a deal which he said could not wait any longer.

Defending his decision on London's LBC radio, Johnson said he was "prepared to do anything to show that they're safe within reason".

Pressed as to whether he would be willing to be filmed being hosed down, he said: "I'm not quite sure whether I want to stand in front of a water cannon -- I haven't done anything to deserve it."

But after a few moments' consideration, he told the presenter: "OK. Man or mouse. Alright, you've challenged me to this. I suppose I'm going to have to do it now.

"I'm doing this unfortunately from off-base, so I can see all my poor press people are going to be tearing their hair out. Never mind, it's got to be done."

Johnson's announcement has been seen as a challenge to Home Secretary Theresa May, the government minister responsible for deciding whether to license the use of water cannon.

Both Johnson and May are likely contenders to replace Prime Minister David Cameron as leader of their Conservative party in the event of defeat in the 2015 general election.

The mayor insisted the purchase was purely about getting a good deal and saving money, and claimed that Londoners were "pretty overwhelmingly in support of the measure".

Cameron's spokesman refused to take sides, saying the premier supports the police having water cannon in principle but thinks the correct procedures should be followed before they are put into use.

He's going to end up being Prime Minister one day, and the country is going to be a much funnier place as a result.

Won't this just encourage more people to riot, once they know water cannons are safe?
    John Brown did nothing wrong.

More likely he'll discover it actually really hurts, and then either say he's changed his mind or say that rioters deserve it. The joy of Boris is that he's perfectly capable of either.

Seems like a silly issue, though. If there were nothing harmful about being sprayed by a water cannon, it wouldn't stop anyone from rioting.

Edit: Felch beat me to the punch.

Nah Boris is actually a very astute politician, he just takes full advantage of having a bumbling and charming demeanor. Don't get me wrong he's eccentric as hell, but he's also a very smart man.

"Minus the crack" implies intelligence and perhaps competency would cease to be nerfed.

But I was referring more to them just being two light skinned, light haired guys of similar age and inherent ridiculousness... also, they're both mayors of major cities in their respective countries.

Do I need to explain every one-liner?

Apart from when he's caught out being casually racist, lying to Parliament, and agreeing to having journalists beaten up on behalf of his jailed drug-dealing best friends.

Surely his career must be in ruins then, no?

Unusually for a politician he actually is smart. He used to be editor of the Spectator and has written a number of books, including about one of his favourite subjects Ancient Rome. Really interesting guy when he's talking about something he's passionate about.

Not sure why 'safe' should equate to 'won't deter' (paraphrased). He could show it is safe and as painful as hell.

And who else read it as 'spayed'?
