1989 – Solidarity's victory in the first (somewhat) free parliamentary elections in post-war Poland sparks off a succession of peaceful anti-communist revolutions in Eastern Europe, leads to the creation of the so-called Contract Sejm and begins the Autumn of Nations.
I'm surprised China included this one - 'Poland casts off communism inspiring others.' Cuts rather close.

... and an estimated 100,000 people in Hong Kong attended a memorial service today.

Well...now 25 years have come and gone and the totalitarians are still in control. They are doing a much better job these days of anticipating dissent. They are also doing a much better job of improving standards of living and nationalistic pride. Has the world finally created a stable totalitarian regime...or will time work its ravages on the "ChiComs"?

I only wish I would live long enough to know the answer.
"I am sick and tired of people who say that if you debate and you disagree with this administration somehow you're not patriotic. We should stand up and say we are Americans and we have a right to debate and disagree with any administration." - Hillary Clinton, 2003

One gay vocabulary word (used by old queens) is 'ornamentals' .

Shrubs or rugs. A difficult choice.
