I've known that parental leave is almost nonexistent in the US legislation: 12 unpaid weeks is not enough at all. "But of course, like with health insurance, any serious company will include better parental leave in their benefits package!" thought I and went to check. I've found several mentions on the web that tech companies have "awesome" parental leave benefits.
Google provides 5(wow!) months of paid(oh-em-gee!) parental leave. If that is awesome, then I'm worried about American babies. What about unpaid job-protected leave? Even in Russia, where we have a cap on paid parental leave, federally mandated 1.5 years of paid leave amount to 3 months of paid leave for my wife, plus she can choose to get 1.5 more years of unpaid job-protected leave. A 3-year old kid needs his mother's attention much less than a 3-month or even a 5-month old one.
How come Americans tolerate such policies?
