  • Blast from the Past: Apolyton Archaeology Site Uncovered!

Over the years there's been a lot of features on Apolyton go missing. A lot of interesting content just gone, or at least not accessible here anymore. I was updating the backup methods today and checking out a lot of the folders that clutter up the site for things that need to be saved. Ran across a lot of interesting content that should probably be added back to the site.

Also in the process searching to see if the content was already accessible on the site, I noticed some other sites that archive Apolyton content still have some of the missing content. So between the lost stuff on the server and the archived stuff on scraper sites, there's quite a lot of Apolyton to bring back home. (Or at least release into the wild.)

I'll try to republish a few of the interviews, columns, and other content at least once a week. If you have any specific requests I can put those at the front of the line (if they exist). If anyone is interested in helping out on this project, let me know.

Revisiting content that helped make Apolyton great. See what we're digging up from the past!

Also, if anyone should happen to know where a complete repository of the old .shtml files are, that would be very helpful. I think most of that content can be gotten other ways, but it would be easier with the original files.

We need to dig up the interview I did with AH that ended up getting Markos banned from ACOL.

You're looking for a series of features called (IIRC) "Interviews with prominent Apolytoners". I think there were five of them which were terribly worthy hagiographies of people who were super and special and wonderful. And then there was a sixth which was (as you'd expect, given who was responsible) a ribald stream of nonsense from two people dicking about. It killed the feature stone-dead and caused site war between Poly and Planet-ACOL that got Markos banned.

Was that here, or at ACOL?
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Cool! Just read a couple of them, and I agree, you're doing an awesome job with this. Any plans/ideas to revive the "classic" communities, e.g. SMAC?

EDIT: Actually, SMAC's not doing too bad--but CivIV, for some reason, is a ghost town. Not trying to criticize you--you inherited this--just excited for a revival here.

It's been a while since I last checked, but are the Viking files of Civ2 still available? It was one of the things that drove me to this site way back.

Any chance of recovering Apolyton's OT reactions to 9/11?
