Seven people have been killed and seven injured after a gunman drove through a college town spraying bullets from his car.

The shooter was among the dead after the rampage in Isla Vista - a student enclave known for its lively parties next to the University of California, Santa Barbara.

Santa Barbara County Sheriff Bill Brown said authorities are looking at written and video evidence that suggests the killings were "premeditated mass murder".

He said the suspect, who was driving a black BMW, exchanged gunfire with deputies before crashing into a parked car.

He said he didn't know whether the suspect was shot by deputies, or if his wound was self-inflicted.

Sheriff Brown said the shootings occurred at several sites in the town, resulting in nine crime scenes.

He said the gunman is believed to have acted alone, appearing to discount earlier reports that a second suspect was detained after the gunfire broke out at around 9:30pm local time on Friday.

A student told KEYT-TV he saw shots fired from the car, killing one woman and critically injuring another.

"I heard shots, scream, pain," Michael Vitak said. "All emotions. I hope she is going to be fine."

The station said the black BMW slammed into as many as two cars.

The shooting prompted officials to issue alerts urging people to stay indoors.

Isla Vista's parties include an annual spring bash that turned into a violent blowout last month as young people clashed with police and tossed rocks and bottles.

A university police officer and four deputies were injured and 130 people were arrested.

I used to live in Isla Vista right where he went on his rampage. The whole area is only about a half mile long and like six blocks deep but it is one (if not the) most densely populated areas west of the Mississippi. Del Playa, the main drag (it's the ocean front street there) on a Friday night is pretty much jam packed with hundreds of people walking in the street, going from house to house, and just about every other house for five blocks straight is throwing an open kegger party. Also this guy has to be a real mister creepy (even before he went on his rampage) to not be able to get laid in I.V.. The school is about 80% female so there are four girls for every guy, most of them are extremely cute white chicks (13 years ago the school was ~95% white), and the old saying was if you can't get laid in I.V. then you probably couldn't get laid in a whore house with a stack of hundreds.

Anyway, this guy is a complete psychopath and it's real sad what he did. He was also a coward who shot himself rather than face the punishment for his crimes. My hat is off to the Isla Vista Foot Patrol who was apparently johnny on the spot when the psycho started his rampage though, since they were on foot, they had a hard time cornering the psycho as he sped his car through streets packed with pedestrians running over several of them. That had to be a horrifying experience. When I was a student there they had some rich kid (his dad was a Hollywood director) who went off his meds and then went on a rampage with his car running over a bunch of people and even killing a few. I was out of town the night it happened (on a structural geology field trip) but as bad as that was this event tops it as the worst in I.V. history. What a cowardly loser.

Oh, and I was actually in Santa Barbara last month when the Spring Bash was happening though I was attending a friend's wedding downtown and wouldn't go near IV as it would have been creepy for a guy in his thirties to go to a college party. The wedding was far better though all the hotels doubled or even tripled their prices just because they knew so many out of town college kids would be in IV that weekend.
