What's the argument against a cloth soaked in ether? There's got to be one, it's too simple a choice otherwise.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

In China, they just shoot them in the back of the head. I think they send the family a bill for the bullet.

I think the government should just lie and say "yeah we executed all these people" but instead they are just locked up for life. It makes no difference to everyone else either way... and considering the legal costs associated with DP cases are higher than the costs of locking them up... I'd say the choice is simple.

Though, if the people are later exonerated (by DNA maybe), they might have to be put in some sort of witness relocation program... to let them have their second chance without all the publicity (to save face for the government and to protect the person's privacy).

Of course, that's more of a derogatory term nowadays.
            It doesn't have to be.

He's right though - the news of an execution is emotionally satisfying to people who desire such outcomes in our criminal justice system. Whether or not that person is dead or not usually is immaterial to that emotional response except in retrospect. If you're mad someone isn't actually dead years after the fact and have in fact been languishing in prison, thats a reflection of a person's blood lust or misplaced priorities.

...and the part about an innocent person being forced to live a new life so he doesn't embarrass the government?

If it displaced a suifficient amount of oxygen in the inspired air, yes. Is the purpose of this just to make the victim's screams as he suffocates freaking hilarious?

I was thinking that we really must reduce the cost of getting people into orbit so we can space them. What more fitting justice than to launch them back into the atmosphere with the assurance that their body will utterly disintegrate on re-entry so that their molecules will be scattered across the globe? Even better would be to launch them into the sun.
