  • US Military Confident it Could Stop a Real-Life Godzilla Attack

Sgt. Maj. James Dever offers some insight on how the US military would handle a real Godzilla attack.

Thankfully, Godzilla has (until now) been a product of fantasy, and we've never suffered in real-life attacks from giant radioactive dinosaurs. But what if we did? Godzilla (2014)'s Military Technical Advisor, Sgt. Maj. James Dever was asked how the U.S. military would hypothetically take on the monster, and, more importantly, whether they could do it. Despite the military usually amounting to no more than cannon fodder in these types of films, Dever is confident that the US military could stop a real-life Godzilla attack.

"The military would be very successful," he said confidently, adding "With the manpower and the equipment we have, we'd definitely be successful in taking down Godzilla." He said that US would be quick to mobilize all of its military forces, from the navy to the air force to even ground troops, and they would simply be able to overwhelm the monster with numbers.

He did however see a couple of complications in a potential military vs. Godzilla showdown, in particular, Godzilla's fiery "Atomic Breath" and if the battle took place in a densely populated city. "Once he's in the city our major concern are all the civilians," said Dever. "The military would put their combined effort to move all the civilians out before we could engage him."

As for the potential of using atomic weapons on the monster, Dever said that would probably only be a very last resort, as the decision would have to come from the President and would only be used after civilians were evacuated.

"It's not a known thing fighting monsters," said Dever. "But we'd give it our best, and hope he would go down in a day or two."

    a) We really do have plans for EVERYTHING don't we?
    b) Anyone care to game out a "realistic" plan of attack the military might use?

Yeah, Godzilla is not a problem. Cruise missiles, anybody?

We have a lot of cruise missiles.

Real life flesh and blood is not impervious to metal bits hitting at supersonic speeds or high explosives. However, movie flesh and blood is impervious to whatever the script demands.

Blue whales are as large as any dinosaur ever was. A single Japanese whaling ship is more than a match for it.

No cruise missiles, those tend to be "attack coordinate here" or "lock onto giant metal radar reflector in featureless ocean" type affairs. The cruise function of those missiles is really for long range attack.

No, here you would want a maverick or hellfire that has real time TV or other designator guidance so you can track the moving target and avoid the obstacle rich ruined city I assume you are attacking him in. An apache can carry up to 16 hellfire I believe (20lb warhead each) and I think F16 can in the range of 12 mavericks (120 to 300lb warhead each)if it uses all it's underwing hard points.

If you really had to you could use any guided bomb kit like a JDAM, but the target might move to much so I'd go with the missiles.

If he is still in the water a single torpedo will do, his bones will be so shattered from the underwater compression wave it won't really matter what the explosives do.

Think about the size of your body versus a bullet. And bullets don't explode.

I think we're ignoring all the evidence here.

1- Godzilla is larger in height and weight than known biological materials could allow for, especially when considering the forces involved in point 2. Thus we have to assume that Godzilla is comprised of materials unknown to man, and as such we can't be sure how those materials would react to our weapons. Perhaps it's armor plating is unobtainium like the shell of the ship in Core and only gets stronger as it gets compressed/heated. All we would be doing then is ensuring it can move through solid objects with ease ... thus hastening the destruction of the city. We really don't know.

2 - All the evidence suggests that Godzilla can dodge cruise missiles with it's cat-like reflexes. We would first need to constrain the beast somehow to get a clear kill-shot. Sgt. Maj. Dever's complete lack of acknowledgement of this issue leaves me less than impressed with our nation's military readiness against Godzilla attacks.

3 - There is strong evidence to suggest that Godzilla is a result of extreme radiation exposure. If we did nuke it, wouldn't we just further the process by adding even more radiation to it? Godzilla wouldn't just suck up the blast like the Martians in Mars Attacks but would rather be further mutated into an even larger and more destructive beast. Again, Sgt. Maj. Dever's suggestion that we might nuke Godzilla if in a situation where the option presents itself leads me to suspect our military are actually in collusion with Godzilla

                  Wake up sheeple!

I believe Godzilla has been nuked more than once, and did indeed suck up the rads and get stronger - in Godzilla 1984, for sure.

I also believe that you usually forget that the possessive of it "does not posses" the apostrophe, thus "It's stronger than before!" and "Its hide bounces bullets." One is a contraction of it is, and the other is not.

I think the F-16 only carries 6 mavericks? That's what the A-10 carries anyway. I don't recall if it's because of weight or because of the software.

Canister round from an Abrams would **** him up pretty good, or the bushmaster on a Bradley.

No, it wouldn't. At least not more than the warhead part. Maybe the guidance part.

He does it every time, and here I can troll him for it. I came up with that 'possessive doesn't possess the apostrophe' mnemonic in the 80s. Maybe that'll fix him. One can always hope...

Its so obvious ... now that I have brought the truth to light about the military industrial complex's collusion with Godzilla the "establishment" is trying to mislead the sheeple by obfuscating the issue with they're own definitions and rules as if such things had any authority. Its time to wake up sheeple! Take back this great country of our's. Ensure our children and grandchildren won't have to live in fear of Godzilla
