Letterman was unbearable after he left NBC, I watched Letterman on my 13" Bedside TV every summer when he was on NBC. Chris Elliott come out from under the audience was great. After Letterman was Baa Baa Black Sheep (Black Sheep Squardon in syndication.)

If you look at their ratings side by side, Letterman didn't have what you would call a consensus lead.
And I have agreed that he was better, just not so much more that you can make fun of someone that didn't agree.
