    The essay will be optional
I don't get this. If completing the essay portion helps your score it's not really "optional".

a focus on “powerful words” that carry different meanings in different contexts, such as “synthesis” or “empirical.”
    lol wut

The math portion will cover fewer topics but in more depth, with a focus on linear equations and data analysis — again, connected to real-world scenarios.
lol so they're basically just making it easier?

                And the crowd salutes.

(I actually googled "panda ass", God help me, just to make you laugh. That was on the third row of pictures. I may never recover.)

In Maths I would say that fewer topics in more depth is harder not easier. And more useful if used with real world examples.

Any change to exams here, the generations that have already done the exams claim it's making it easier. Good to see that's universal.

The overhaul reflects deep concern — among students, parents, teachers and college admissions officers — that the SAT did not fairly reflect the work teenagers did in school.

Can someone dig up a quote from a Roman saying the kids exams are much easier than in their day?

The topics they say want to focus on are "linear equations" and "data analysis". What makes you think the questions will be harder? Solving high school level linear equations, and looking at tables and graphs and answering questions about them sounds pretty easy if you ask me.

Those are incredibly vague terms. "Data Analysis" could cover everything from looking at a simple bar chart to analysing collision trace data at Cern. There's no evidence for it being easier or harder based on that.

More in depth does suggest they are going to be looking for more than a cursory surface knowledge though, so it's a reasonable hypothesis that this would mean the questions are more challenging, on fewer areas.
