Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel has unveiled plans to shrink the US Army to its smallest size since before World War Two.

Outlining his budget plan, the Pentagon chief proposed trimming the active-duty Army to 440,000-450,000 personnel, down from 520,000 currently.

Cold War-era Air Force fleets - the U-2 spy plane and the A-10 attack jet - will also be retired.

However, the plan requires approval from Congress, which could change it.

The US military is under pressure to downsize after two costly foreign wars.

The A-10 and U-2 are currently much more cost effective than their proposed replacements. It'd be stupid to kill them if we're just going to end up spending more money for something less effective

I predict the warthog won't end up getting eliminated. Congress loves it for the same reason we do: It's ****ing awesome and badass. They'll horse trade until it gets back on the table and the Air Force will use it to weasel more money for programs it likes better. But I'm guessing some squadrons will still get cut.

Not sure about the U2. But I read that the drone that replaces (GlobalHawk) it is expensive as **** and not as capable, though it apparently has longer endurance. Unlike the A-10 the U2 is a plane that is useful in peacetime--it is a spy plane.
