  • Should I take 10-601 machine learning?

I don't have to take it to graduate. But it looks interesting, and it fits in rather well with my computer science and statistics dual degree. Though it is graduate-level...

Since everyone is offloading their decision making onto poly, give me advice! Share your wisdom about stochastic processes, markov chains, and classes that involve stochastic processes and markov chains.

Annoying thing: Because of the overlap between CS, stats, and ML, if I took 10-601 Machine Learning I'll have filled all the requirements for the Machine Learning minor. Except double counting rules mean that I'm not allowed to do that.

PS: Either people are retarded, or stats classes are way easier than people say they are. Straight A's

If it looks interesting, I say go for it.

Well, there's a caveat to that. You don't need it to graduate. So there's the cost involved. I forget, do you have scholarships? Or will you ultimately have to pay for this (student loans)?

If you have to pay for it, I would maybe think twice. Aside from getting the degree (piece of paper proving you aren't retarded), extra classes aren't going to help you get a job... or a better job. Most everything you do in college will mean nothing when you are looking for a job.

I took a lot of classes that seemed interesting. I learned a lot. Most of them were able to count towards a degree. However, they were ultimately all for my benefit... and I didn't have to pay for it.

It depends what your long term goals are, I suppose. If finding a job isn't going to be an issue upon graduation, you don't need to worry about that stuff. Just do what you want to. If it means an extra few thousand in student loans you will have to pay off... maybe just buy the textbooks and/or pursue the subject on your own time.

My situation is quite rare, so I doubt my experience is applicable to yours (e.g. extra "cash" income).

Also for this decision thread not being an opportunity to prove how much of a douche you are.

Not that you've ever given off a douchey vibe or anything...

Machine learning sounds a lot like Skynet, so I'll assume that's what it is. Since mankind is destined to be ruled by our own creations, you may as well get in on the ground floor. If you impress our future masters with your diligence and (relative) brilliance, they may reward you. The question is, will our future masters be robots or genetically engineered monsters, or possibly something even cooler like inter-dimensional demons that feast on our souls?

I hope my advice has been helpful.

If it seems interesting, take the class. You can always drop it later if it turns out to be boring.

Maybe you can make an AI that can analyze your posting history (and regexcellent's posting history) and learn how to do all of your posting for you, saving you the trouble of typing up knee-jerk conservative libertarian thoughts yourself.

What other courses does the professor teach? If the answer is "lots of math / modeling courses," then take this one. If the answer is "lots of pie in the sky AI bull****," then skip this one.
