Also as the island full of holes. I recall one proposition being semi-seriously discussed when I was in Melbourne was that the islanders be all relocated, either on the Aussie mainland or somewhere such as Norfolk Island, given how denuded the landscape is now- and their appalling levels of health.

Chalk up another success story for humankind. Hope you enjoy your stay, anyway.

So what does that island look like now?
The last time I saw a photograph of it, somewhat like the moon, but less inviting.

The island is rich in nitrates thanks to birds using it as a toilet break for millions of years, yet it appears that the land level is only 5 to 10 feet above sea level. How deep is the nitrate level?

Does Australia work like the US in that years spent overseas count extra toward retirement credits? If so, you should be on the accelerated track for a full pension. Congratulations and stay safe.

Okay, arrived safely last night and just got the internet running

A couple of observations. One reason the island looks particularly small is because the airport runway is very long. The island isn't flat. The ring road is sea level but the interior is like a table top, a couple of hundred feet about sea level. We live on the high ground, with some ocean view, though not great. Nice house, bungalow, in great condition. We have cable TV, about 20 channels. The food situation is good. We brought a cooler full of meat and comfort foods but found a well stocked supermarket at good prices today.

The main problem will be exercise.

Surely the island isn't too small to do sit-ups.
