How was the central government more powerful in, say, 1870 then it had been in 1860...? Maybe a bit more powerful but I'd say it's taken a long time for the government to evolve to what it is today.

Yeah...slavery. The blight on the State's Right's argument. The South can never overcome that one, but State's Rights is still a founding principle of this country and it is designed to keep government close to the people.

Try these two things...call your stste reps office and see if you can get him/her on the phone. The call your U.S. congressman's office......

Yes, and it's certainly "necessary" if you feel like you might lose your slaves...

I understand why you are so upset, PLATO. If the history of my land was evil, I'd try my best to live in denial.

Denial that it happened or denial that it was evil?

                          I can't recall if PLATO is a slavery-denier. It wouldn't surprise me.

Neither. Happened and was evil. Certainly the South was wrong in slavery and certainly that was a primary cause of the war. The good result of the war was that slavery was abolished. The bad result was an entire region of a country was destroyed, millions killed, and the rights of the States diminished.

It IS my opinion that the diminishment of the rights of the States was a bad thing and moved governmental power further from the governed. It IS also my opinion that the abolishment of slavery was a very good thing.

What is so hard to understand about that?

If you leave states to their own devices, slavery will start up.
