  • First cold - any suggestions?

He's cranky, congested, has red eyes and isn't eating very much. Not really worried, but I want to make him comfortable.

Elevate head of bed, run a humidifer in his room, use the bulb suction (or other suction device) to clear his nose, and if he is over a month old you can use some Vicks rub, too.

      How old?

Almost 4 months. We've been doing everything other than the Vicks (using nose Frida which is much better than the bulb).

Thanks, guy. It's just being his dad, but I find it cute when he whines and looks pathetic and angry at being sick.

Do you belittle him from a position of smug authority?

Only a little bit. After all, he caught the cold from me.

Well, ****. I was just going to suggest giving him liquor.

Ok, not really. Maybe just slap him and tell him to man up or he'll turn out like Speer.

Will lowering the room temperature to around 18C help?

WTF? 18C is recommended temperature for babies to sleep in, from the NHS. It's about 65F, perfectly comfortable for sleeping.

Not sure what the recommendations are in the US, but in the UK you can give infant paracetamol suspensions from 2 months, makes quite a big difference to the feeling cranky bit and can help with sleeping.

Had to look up "nosefrida" to discover it's what we call the snot vampire. Good call there, KH; that thing is awesome. A little more complicated to use than the bulb, but it works much better and you can clean it. The only problem is, our boy hates it. Thankfully we haven't had to use it for the past eight months or so, but he used to cry the second we even got it out. But I imagine he'd scream from the bulb too. Anyway, babies are incredibly tough little animals, and it sounds like you're doing everything right.
