  • This is how San Francisco sounded just before getting destroyed in 1906

Hardscrabble Pictures added sound to this old black and white silent film of San Francisco's Market Street in April 14, 1906, just four days before the big earthquake that destroyed 80 percent of the city. It's really wonderful—put on your headphones and listen to the calm before the storm.

I have seen plenty of restored and colorized footage from the beginning of the 20th century, but adding sound definitely added to a way more powerful experience. They should do this with every film.

I've seen rips in the ground from that quake along the beaches and hills just south of the city where the fault heads out to sea

No order at all. You're on your own.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

There wasn't much in the way of traffic laws or cross walks in 1906.

This is the same city soundscape as Civ4...
