    ACK!
...Albert Einstein was a Caesar fan. Alfred Hitchcock called Mr. Caesar the funniest performer since Charlie Chaplin.

Television comedy in its early days was dominated by boisterous veterans of vaudeville and radio who specialized in broad slapstick and snappy one-liners. Mr. Caesar introduced a different kind of humor to the small screen, at once more intimate and more absurd, based less on jokes or pratfalls than on characters and situations. It left an indelible mark on American comedy.

“If you want to find the ur-texts of ‘The Producers’ and ‘Blazing Saddles,’ of ‘Sleeper’ and ‘Annie Hall,’ of ‘All in the Family’ and ‘M*A*S*H’ and ‘Saturday Night Live,’ “ Frank Rich wrote in The New York Times when he was its chief theater critic, “check out the old kinescopes of Sid Caesar.”

A list of Mr. Caesar’s writers over the years reads like a comedy all-star team. Mel Brooks (who in 1982 called him “the funniest man America has produced to date”) did some of his earliest writing for him, as did Woody Allen. So did the most successful playwright in the history of the American stage, Neil Simon. Carl Reiner created one landmark sitcom, “The Dick Van **** Show”; Larry Gelbart was the principal creative force behind another, “M*A*S*H.” Mel Tolkin wrote numerous scripts for “All in the Family.” The authors of the two longest-running Broadway musicals of the 1960s, Joseph Stein (“Fiddler on the Roof”) and Michael Stewart (“Hello, Dolly!”), were Caesar alumni as well.

Sketches on “Your Show of Shows” and its successor, “Caesar’s Hour” (1954-57), were as likely to skewer the minutiae of domestic life as to lampoon classic Hollywood movies, arty foreign films and even operas. Mr. Caesar won Emmys for both those shows...

      • I have some questions about the rules:

        g) The Daily Double: +50 points awarded to any player who has two celebrities on their roster die on the same day.
        h) The Hat Trick: +75 points awarded to any player who has three celebrities on their roster die over the course of one week (any 7-day span).
        i) The Grand Slam: +100 points awarded to any player who has four (or more) celebrities on their roster die in the same month (any 30-day span).
Can these be claimed more than once per season?

What happens if say someone has 5 hits spread in such a way that they would fall into two different periods of 30 days with 4 hits, so 3 of the hits are actually counting towards 2 grand slams each?

        k) The Killing Spree Award: +50 points to the player with the most consecutive hits. In the event of a tie the points will be divided equally.
Does this continue to count even if someone else chooses some of the celebs in the streak?

        • For the Daily Double/Hat Trick/Grand Slam, each hit only counts once for each award. The same hit can't count for two grand slams but can count for a hat trick and a grand slam. This came up last year, as I was close to the "rolling" grand slam you used for an example.

          • G'night pa.

Ralph Waite, John Walton Sr., is dead.

            http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/15/ar...t-85.html?_r=0

Ralph Waite, a multifaceted actor who became etched in the American imagination as the craggy-faced, big-hearted patriarch of a rustic, Depression-era clan in the popular 1970s television series, “The Waltons,” died Thursday. He was 85.

The death of Mr. Waite, a resident of the Palm Springs, Calif., area, was confirmed by his manager, Alan Mills, The Associated Press reported.

In September 1972, CBS premiered “The Waltons” against two already popular shows: Flip Wilson’s irreverent comedy show on NBC, and “Mod Squad” about hippie undercover police officers on ABC. What some saw as a cornball newcomer was expected to be buried, but within two seasons it had driven its competitors off the air.

The success of “The Waltons” owed almost everything to the actors and the characters they played, members of a homespun, hardscrabble rural family used to surmounting challenges through the old-fashioned virtues. The foremost was John Jr., or “John-Boy,” the oldest of seven children. John-Boy, played by Richard Thomas, was a serious young man with a passion to be a writer.

Almost as significant was Mr. Waite’s role as John’s father, John Sr., the family patriarch who combined wisdom, goodness, courage and a bit of a temper. He did not approve of hunting animals for sport, but hunted to put food on his hard-pressed family’s table. Though he shunned organized religion, his wife, Olivia, called him “the most God-fearing man I know.”

The viewing public lapped it up. In 2004, a poll of TV Guide readers of the “50 Greatest Dads of All Time” rated him No. 3, behind only Dr. Cliff Huxtable on “The Cosby Show” and Ben Cartwright on “Bonanza.”

But when Mr. Waite first heard about the possible show, he was not particularly enthused. His agent advised him to take the part so he could “pick up a couple of bucks” and go back to New York.

“The Waltons” lasted for nine seasons, and six movie sequels. In 1992, President George H. W. Bush said he wanted to “make American families a lot more like the Waltons and a lot less like ‘The Simpsons.' ”

“Somehow, we struck a vein in the life of the world,” Mr. Waite said in an interview in 2013 with The Lancaster News of Lancaster, S.C....

                    • Needs team names.

And since people are doing things; a hit for me: Akkineni Nageswara Rao

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Wednesday expressed grief over the sudden demise of legendary Telugu actor Akkineni Nageswara Rao.

Rao, who had been suffering from cancer, died in Hyderabad on Wednesday morning. He was 90.

"I wish to convey my deepest condolences to his family and pray that the Almighty may give them the strength to bear this great loss with courage and fortitude," Jayalalithaa said in her condolence message.

The chief minister said Rao's death had left a void that could never be filled. "In his passing away, India has lost one of its greatest actors and his demise is an irreparable loss to the film industry as well as to the nation," she said, while recalling her work with the actor in many films, including her first film 'Manushulu Mamathalu.'

Rao showed keen interest in acting in stage shows right from his young age and stepped into the film world through the film, 'Dharmapathini.'

He starred in a famous Tamil-Telugu bilingual film, 'Devadas,' in which he made an indelible mark in acting. He acted in more than 250 films in Tamil and Telugu which included, 'Or Iravu,' 'Poongoothai,' 'Allauddinnum Arputha Vilakkum,' 'Madharkula Manikkam,' 'Kalyanaparisu,' 'Premabhishekham,' 'Mooga Manasulu' and 'Maaya Bazaar'.

The credit of acting in a dual role for the first time in a Telugu film (Iddaru Mithrulu) goes to Rao. He was conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke award, the highest honour for a film personality in India. He was also a recipient of Padmavibhushan, Kalaimamani and national award for the best actor.

Over the last month I've been bombarded with ****, from weird charges on my tuition that I had to take care of, to being less productive than I anticipated (i.e. not at all) during my trip to C-ville, VA, to my class schedule having to be completely redone. While classes were ongoing. In fact my classes still aren't sorted out. And two weeks ago the power supply died on the computer I was storing it all on and I actually lost a bunch of stuff when it crashed (something I didn't realize until last friday). But you can see your list and everyone else's now at least, it isn't much, but the dead pool will go on this year.

I'll finish up the rest piecemeal this week.
