73 minus 39 equals 34. That's just over a third of the 20th Century when El Caudillo was the head honcho. He may often mistakenly be called a fascist as here, but wasn't. Also, the government on Franco's welcome demise was not leftist, but remained conservative.

Wouldn't it be possible for Spanish troops to take the rock by approaching from the top?

The rock isn't all that defendable except from the seaward side, like Singapore.

This adds insult to injury to the Spanish who have been passively defending it for 300 years by preventing attacks from the landward side. Oh the irony...

Another important role Gibraltar would probably play is signals intelligence. It is the ideal place to collect information on passing ships and submarines. I'll bet the sea bed is covered with censors.

Hitler was going to take Gibraltar using a small force of siege artillery, special forces (Brandenburg regiment), and paratroop/gliders. There was talk of using chemical weapons, like at Fort Eben Emael in Belgium which fell very quickly even though considered a tough target.

Argentina would still control the Malvinas today if the islands were as close to the Argentine mainland as Gibraltar is to Spain. You're not taking Gibraltar back once Spain liberates it.
