That precise contraption (phone booth teleporter, dial a number and it will take you that number's cooresponding phone booth) is present in the Ringworld universe.

News flash. Just because I point out one example off top of my head, does not mean that is the ONLY one that bothers me when it comes to plausibility in science fiction.

          (a) You're missing the point if you're critiquing Star Trek's plausibility and (b) you lack imagination.

Gravity generator = a device that manipulates the Higgs field; warp drive = Alcubierre drive; transporters = quantum teleportation. Is any of that real? No. Plausible? Almost certainly not. Able to be accepted if you suspend disbelief? Absolutely.

The transporter is just a thing that saves money on special effects.

That's only kind of true. Star Trek reused a lot of footage, especially cut scenes of shuttles moving across space.

The movies from TOS reused so much footage. Every time the Enterprise was at Starbase, the same damn shots...

Lucy did what she could, but there was only so much she could do. They only had the money they had.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

The transporter was something that had to be disabled often because it would only get in the way of a bad script

Much like artificial gravity is the single most reliable component of any starship because making ST would cost too much money otherwise.
