  • Because it increased their power in this situation.

Why are the Democrats now helping push the government over the cliff?
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

More like republicans jumped off the cliff and had an unbreakable rope tying them to the democrats.

Oh? They forced Reid to put the sequester cuts on the table?

          • Mad Monk, what is your angle?

Are you so impressed with the change in procedure rules that you give it a pass or do you really think the Republicans did the right thing in making it so only one man can break the stalemate?

Mad Monk does not want to fess up to the fact that Tea Bagger-type Republicans in U.S. Congress wanted a federal government shutdown.

Hence why the day before the shutdown, they so conveniently changed the rules in the House.

It seems as though Reid is playing the Republicans game (well when the Republicans were smarter about it). Put other things on the table and see how much can be gotten before the deadline. It seems the House Republicans offered to give back the sequester cuts for cuts in Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. It seems as though a comprehensive deal will be reached by Thursday (likely Wed night, knowing these things).

Democrats in U.S. Congress and President Obama are happy to end the shutdown and avert a debt ceiling crisis once House Republicans allow House representatives to vote on a fair, clean budget (which by the way, the majority in the House DO want, but they're not allowed to vote on it now).

                  • And now some Republicans in U.S. Congress want to tie their anti-contraceptive agenda to the debit ceiling.

                    • Yes, I am impressed. They prevented an end run and forced the conference. That's all they did.

Yes, but they were not forced to do so by The Evil Republicans. That is my point.

Personally, when he asked for that I'd have been really tempted to respond with one of the Democratic sound bites talking about settled law and how awful it is to change it.

                              • I didn't know we had a "debit ceiling." I thought the whole problem was that we ran on credit.
