...I think because beards are masculine and thus a joke about wearing a fake one to look like a man - drawing an insulting parallel to marrying a woman to pass as straight. Insulting, but I bet it wasn't breeders who came up with it...

Hm, maybe overthinking it, BU. More simply: A beard covers the face; a beard provides "cover" to a gay person, usually for career and/or family purposes.

The term goes all the way back to the 60s, but has become more commonly known since the 90s. It now seems to reference anything from a fake date to a sham marriage, and is increasingly applied to both genders.

I've heard "beard" referenced on a number of occasions in attempts to deceive. Such as to an agent acting on behalf of an individual who wants their identity hidden.
