You need to resurrect all those threads where everybody said you couldn't do it, so you can laugh in their faces.
I think at a certain point it changed from couldnt to shouldnt.

Doc, about two-thirds of the armed forces are employed in purely supportive tasks, IIRC. That's how it has to be. A modern fighter jet needs like a hundred hours of maintenance for every hour in the air, and when a general says "move this battalion here," a whole bunch of guys (like Al, I imagine) have to hustle to arrange for them, their crap, their quarters, and all necessary supplies in a timely manner without annoying the general with any details. While I don't buy into the whole mystique of the U.S. Armed Forces, Al's intellect is at least better employed there than hauling a rifle around. The USMC sends recruiters around to high schoolers, finds younger bodies to do that. I saw some today.
Oh this reminds me, before poly died Alby was making fun of the Army for still having cooks without apparently realizing that the Marines have them too, as does every branch.
edit-I wonder what it's like to be one of the poor ****ers who winds up as a food service officer

There are still infantry officers. At least in the army the only officer job harder to get than infantry is aviation. Supposedly, anyway, that's what they tell me. No idea about the marines but I suspect it is similar.
If you think about all of the **** that a person needs to live, especially for extended periods, logistics gets really complicated really fast, and that's not including stuff like fuel and ammunition and spare parts for vehicles. As you move up in size, units are supposed to be able to operate independently for longer and longer periods. I think the smallest Marine unit that can handle 30 days of self-sufficiency has around 1200 people. The logistical overhead for supporting a bunch of combat troops overseas is massive.
A ****ing supply officer?!!
Yur ****ing kidding me.
Yur a killer! not a ****ing REMFER!
No. Supply officer is an entirely different MOS. Logistics is focused on the supply chain of getting things where they need to be, not warehouse management which is what supply officers do exclusively.
Logistics officers plan, coordinate, execute and/or supervise the execution of all logistics functions and the six functional areas of combat service support (CES): supply, maintenance, transportation, general engineering, health services, and services. Logistics officers serve as commanders or assistants to the commanders of CES units/elements and as members of general or executive staffs in the operating forces, supporting establishment, and joint staffs. They perform duties of embarkation officer, maintenance management officer, motor transport officer, landing support officers, and are responsible for administrative and tactical unit movement of personnel, supplies, and equipment by all modes of transportation.
My number one was engineer but unfortunately I didn't get it. Maybe when I'm a captain I'll be able to go engineering school and make a lateral move.

No. The Marine Corps does not make new cooks. There are Marines who hold the MOS as a holdover but the MOS is defunct and no new Marines become food service workers.
Food service officer is also defunct. It was originally a b-billet for O-3's and above only but I don't think it even exists anymore. Regardless, there aren't lieutenants getting food service officer. It is not a primary MOS.
Sodexo handles food service for the Marine Corps.

At what point will the Marines just outsource the logistics to UPS?
