Given that she's been splashed across every news channel in every country in the western world for weeks as a result, I think it was a fairly successful 'desperate measure for attention'.

That's one theory. Devout Hindus, however, believe that she, Lindsay and Britney are all manifestations of Puja Trishkabinhasiputradhama, She Who Raises Uncomfortable Questions About The State Of Our Society.

Elok, people have been raising those questions for decades. Miley Cyrus is unexceptional and with significant precedent.

Indeed, for the goddess Trishkabinhasiputradhama is immortal and many-aspected. Though I'm not sure when she began this specific chain of incarnations to teach us. I just Wiki'ed Shirley Temple, and she seems to have had a surprisingly functional non-fustercluck of an adult life; she gave up acting at twenty-two, married only twice (the second time lasted fifty-plus years), and served as Ambassador to two different countries. Does anyone know when exactly child stardom began leading all-but-inexorably to a ruined life?

Yeah right. Shirley Temple was tossing Hitler's salad in the bunker days before the Russians moved in.

Judy Garland was already on amphetamine at the ripe young age of 16 when The Wizard of Oz was filmed in 1939.

There simply aren't enough "thanks" for Sava's performance in the thread.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am.

Hmm. One wishes there were some sort of long-term study available to find out if Garland or Temple was the exception. Mickey Rooney turned out more or less okay, I think--except for that part in Breakfast at Tiffany's, and that's horrifying only in retrospect. Wait, Wiki says he was married seven times. Eh, mostly positive, then. Don't see anything terrible for Annette Funicello, either. Drew Barrymore managed to pull out of a very bad dive. Elizabeth Berkley...hmm. Campaigns for PETA, starred in Showgirls, but she was never arrested and doesn't seem coked-up so we'll call her a draw. Christina Applegate is okay too. Yeah, this argument is going nowhere without rigorous, methodical analysis, but I tentatively speculate that the modern star-factory process employed by Disney may be destroying children at a slightly faster rate than old-school exploitation.

Ah. So not a little known female avatar of Shiva then. Thanks for clarifying things.

Happily I remain blissfully unaware of her music, her videos and mostly, her existence. I thought Eva Green in 'Kingdom Of Heaven' was very sexy- the way she pronounced 'Guy de Lusignan' was just...mmm.... yesss....

I felt the same frisson when I watched Fanny (no s******s at the back) Ardant in 'Elizabeth' and 'Ridicule'. And Jeanne Moreau in 'Les Amants'... must be something about a French accent.
