Jon Miller: MikeH speaks the truth
Jon Miller: MikeH is a shockingly revolting dolt and a masturbatory urine-reeking sideshow freak whose word is as valuable as an aging cow paddy. We've got both kinds
Serious answer - yes, even if purely on a selfish basis I've had tons of specific personal benefits as a direct result of having been nice to someone in the past.

I am nice to everyone, and so couldn't say whether it is better or worse than not being nice would be.
Ditto.

"Capitalism ho!"
I'm extremely polite in person to people I totally despise. A trick is to just imagine that you're pulling the ultimate con, making them think you like them when you hate them. Makes small talk tolerable.
There have been too many times when some random joe schmoe turns out to be someone like my TA for my super-important class next semester for me to be mean to random people and not face serious consequences. It costs nothing to be nice, like Rah said. There's also just the fact that you can't actually make anything better by being mean, and I don't like it when people are mean to me, and someone being unlikable doesn't mean they deserve to have their day ruined. Being mean is pointless.
I guess that doesn't really mesh with the way I communicate with people on poly, but I should point out there's no one on poly that I actually dislike.

By the way, I used to take a who-cares* approach to being nice to people. I did this until I got a job as a cashier in a grocery store. I decided I liked money more than I liked being a jackass. I can also pinpoint that as about the time I started having a vastly larger group of friends in high school. These things are connected.
*(I never bullied anyone or went out of my way to be mean to people, I just never tried to be polite, either.)

Why would you make this a multi vote poll? Are you Braindead? That part's a joke, son.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

He also hates Texans and Australians, he does diversify." ~ Braindead
