Actually, I looked into this just recently as I've been powering mine from work thinking I was probably saving a small but not insignificant amount of money doing so. But the answer is, frankly, **** all!

Apparently charging an iPhone 5 costs $0.41 per year, or $0.53 for a Galaxy SIII, so if I get about 3/4 of the juice from work, I might be saving about 30p annually!!!

Interestingly, the greater use of smartphones might actually be reducing our energy consumption - if only in the short term...

Seems like it's got a bigger battery capacity to me, and thus would cost more to charge...

Now if you're assuming people use the same amount of battery capacity on both phones, you would be right, but there's a reason the S3 has a bigger battery capacity, and it's not because people like heavy phones.

Perhaps they're inadequately describing "costs more because our methodology assumes you charge one full charge per day" or some such. Or perhaps a larger battery does cost more to charge the same amount? Batteries are not perfectly efficient, of course.

Edit: Yes, reading the methodology, they assume one 0-100% charge done per day. Which for an iPhone is probably accurate...

To be clear when you speak of the infrastructure costs, are you refering to the ones described in the article namely server farms etc. required for additional data loads, or are you describing the infrastructure required to deliver power?

Server farms, cell towers, whatever the hell they're using to deliver 4G if it's not the normal cell towers, etc.

Laptops and desktops may be drawing more power by themselves, but people aren't using them to stream movies walking down the street, either.

I use my Droid Bionic as a wifi hotspot all day, and I leave it plugged in all day, because I've seen what hotspotting does to its battery. Gets pretty hot, too.
