If we are to advance as a species, a higher order of intelligence and organization is required. The chaos of free markets and the supremacy of individual liberties isn't going to take us anywhere. But we can have it both ways, I think. There can be freedom but also a plan. To say there is a choice between the two is a false dichotomy. And considering the degree to which conservative "thinkers" can be persuaded by powerful media entities, I think it would be easy to placate those types of people.

If Fox News is good for anything, it has taught as that high quality television presentation can have a profound effect on public opinion.
To us, it is the BEAST.

Also, I don't think Americans would feel comfortable with robot laser cannons at schools and such.
I want ten of those for my future post apocalyptic retirement bunker, calibrated to shoot for the head.

Looks like someone isn't going to get their post-apocalyptic welcome to the neighborhood muffins.

... I'd feel bad shooting the graves of Lynyrd Skynyrd... I guess there are no guns allowed in the afterlife

Just recently there was a guy who got killed at a Wal-mart near here. A lady went into the changing rooms to try on some outfits and this dude came along trying to catch a look through a little crack in the door. Her husband saw him and shot him in the head; dead before he hit the ground.

Guns don't kill people. Peepholes kill people.

There's a bit of a furor down here over an elderly lady shot dead by the police. The police claim that she pointed a gun at them. She was deaf, didn't have her hearing aids on. She called the police when she thought she caught a glimpse of someone in her house. Instead of running for her hearing aides she ran for her gun. The police claim that when they arrived she confronted them and pointed her gun at them despite the fact that they repeatedly told her they were the police - she couldn't hear them because she didn't have her hearing aides on. You'd think the uniforms would have been a give away. My guess is that hearing wasn't her only problem. The family claim the police are lying.
