I recently read a blurb for a book that claimed the Hemings thing was actually based on shoddy scholarship, and that Jefferson's rowdy brother was to blame for the inconvenient light-skinned kids. Now, even if true, that doesn't really let him off the hook for his "breed the women to sell the kids" business strategy, but still.

Well... they deserve credit for getting the ball rolling. After all, it took almost mere hundred years for the fifteenth amendment... and almost another hundred for the Civil Rights Act.

I'm sure it will only be another 50 before a black President doesn't get accused of being a secret muslim born in Kenya.

Public humiliation was also enforced, usually at the third stage ("public moral unmasking"),[11] inmates were forced to denounce all their personal beliefs, loyalties, and values. Notably, religious inmates had to blaspheme religious symbols and sacred texts.[7]

The inmates were required to accept the notion that their own family members had various criminal and grotesque features; they were required to author false autobiographies, comprising accounts of deviant behavior.[11]
