    It's pretty clear many of the immigrants to America were illiterate, you can see that in the simplifed phonetic way they spell their names and surnames too

      i find it amazing... the useless and extra consonants... especially from peoples who seem to only speak using vowels

        Believe it or not the government would require new immigrants to do that. They also required many of them to take "American sounding names" or not be allowed in the country.

          same in Australia - I'm talking about the early settlers with English names, who were clearly illiterate, couldn't spell their own name
