  • My HD broke

The ****er didn't even make its 2nd anniversary. Western Digital. I backupped my data, but it's such a hassle getting a replacement and reinstalling everything. On the bright side, it's a good opportunity to move to 64 bit (still was on Vista 32 bit). Most of my old software should work right?

Please make this thread fun Sava.

You see, that is why we need mind reading technology. We need to understand what the devil is going on inside cats' heads.

I tried to look it up but failed. I'm also guessing it's still in warranty.

Checking the store where I bought I discovered the same HD is actually more expensive now than it was when I bought it 1 year 11 months ago.

How broken is it? Usually hard drives fail slowly over time and you can get most of the data off with a byte level copy. If you keep track of your SMART information from the drive you can just dd it over before anything is lost.

The indicator for the HD doesn't lit up when I start the computer and I can't boot the OS anymore. It all went dead when I was making another backup to an external HD and I got message some files were damaged (ehe files in question copied just fine the day before to another external HD). Then I got some mean looking blue screen and I knew the game was up.

It all happened very fast. It was only yesterday morning that it automatically went to CHKDSK on starting up the computer and it reported damaged sectors. A WD diagnostics tool also reported damage that it couldn't repair. I've tried connecting the HD to the mobo with another wire, and connecting it to another slot, without improvement, so it doesn't seem a wire or a mobo issue. I suppose I could try to reinstall the OS in case it's just system files that got corrupted but I suspect that's not going to help.
