The American Ambassador to Turkey describes the FM as an Islamist in embassy cables per wiki leaks. Ring any bells?
The notion that an Ambassador is not a real official is a nonsense. A single such official in the American diplomatic corp would be a scandal. An Ambassador level appointment would lead to impeachment.
Turkey was a Westernised country with a Westernised political establishment once. Do you remember that?
A fart in a windstorm
Who cares?
and Who cares?
This is a non-analysis.
And if it gets too far out of hand, I'm sure the Turkish military will idly do nothing, as they've always been prone to do.
That time is over now. The Turkish military as a political force is near dead. Its secular generals are being summarily arrested and imprisoned. One was imprisoned for simply accusing the PM of selling out the country. Nowadays that's an offence against the State in Turkey.
See further Ergenekon.
Nowadays Turkey funds "NGOs" that have funny ways of leading assaults on Israeli military blockades.
Par for the course for what was once Israel's closest ally in the Middle East, right? Nothing unusual there?"You say that it is your custom to burn widows. Very well. We also have a custom: when men burn a woman alive, we tie a rope around their necks and we hang them. Build your funeral pyre; beside it, my carpenters will build a gallows. You may follow your custom. And then we will follow ours."--General Sir Charles James Napier

I don't know or care what Chad thinks of it. I know in the grand scheme of things from the US perspective, this is some minor tool who's mouth running really isn't worth much attention. Same way we don't pay a lot of attention to tools like Zhirinovsky. "You're either with us, or..." might have been a nice slogan for domestic consumption, but it's not real consistent with realpolitik. Third world goat****er little fish get away with things like that because we have much bigger fish to fry. When all else fails, blame brown people. | Hire a teen, while they still know it all. | Trump-Palin 2016. And most ambassadors are political plum jobs. All they have to do is not fart audibly at the state dinners and not wipe their noses with the host's napkins, and the real foreign policy work is done by professionals.
But Turkey has a pretty good foreign service on the whole, often underrated.
The US is the only major country I know that posts Dufus as HOM. The DCM is usually the main man - or woman as the case may be in US missions.Last edited by Alexander's Horse; March 25, 2013, 05:25.Any views I may express here are personal and certainly do not in any way reflect the views of my employer. I'm sure there's back room discussions going on about this. Likely nothing will be done by NATO so the minor and major officials will be encouraged. Next thing the Turks will have "these aren't terrorists" training camps going under a NATO SAM umbrella.
The Turkey we knew and loved has evolved into the next Iran. Public sentiment is on the side of the terrorists, that's why the government does nothing. No point in upsetting the electorate.Long time member @ Apolyton

Then again, places like China and Russia don't usually get idiots as their ambassadors, for instance John Huntsman was our ambassador to China for a while. If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Oh, North Korea made another video where they overran Seoul in 3 days and took 150k American hostages. Guess since they endorsed that we should start a war ourselves over it.When all else fails, blame brown people. | Hire a teen, while they still know it all. | Trump-Palin 2016. "You're fired."
