  • Drugs ranked by relative harm

While I question some of the methodology, it's interesting how this list challenges how I rated them in my mind.

With the MCDA modeling method, alcohol came top as the most harmful drug overall. Below are some highlights of their findings:

    Alcohol, overall harm score 72
    Heroin, overall harm score 55
    Crack, overall harm score 54
Crystal meth, overall harm score 33
    Cocaine, overall harm score 27
    Tobacco, overall harm score 26
    Speed/amphetamines, overall harm score 23
    Cannabis, overall harm score 20
    GHB, overall harm score 18
Valium (benzodiazepines), overall harm score 15
    Ketamine, overall harm score 15
    Mephedrone, overall harm score 13
    Butane, overall harm score 10
    Khat, overall harm score 9
    Ecstasy, overall harm score 9
Anabolic steroids, overall harm score 9
    LSD, overall harm score 7
    Buprenorphine, overall harm score 6
    Mushrooms, overall harm score 5

I call bull****. No way that pot is worse for you than any below it. Ask Lyle Alzado about steroids. Have you seen research on Ecstasy's effect on the brain?
I've done LSD and 'shrooms and I'll tell you for fact they're worse on you.

The issue is that there is no normalization for the extant of use in society. This is saying that in society now what does the most harm.

Alcohol is used by far the most so of course it does the most harm.

This study doesn't have much meaning in regards to drug liberalization. It does suggest that if more restriction is desired, alcohol should be restricted.

I suspect they ranked marijuana higher because of the effects of smoking. ??

I can only guess. Obviously, there are other ways to ingest marijuana.

If that's not the case, I have to agree with Slowwypoo. MDMA, for instance, causes permanent brain damage.

JM, that was my problem with it too. Of course alcohol is going to have greatest impact since it is the most widely used.

One might think there's a group of women who'd rank this drugs harm as being higher.

The use this study would have is to suggest we should restrict alcohol more compared to other drugs, as it is currently over-used. The marginal benefit of reducing alcohol users by one unit is higher than that of reducing marijuana users by one unit [unit=some % of people using it].

Cocaine and bull testicle extracts should be higher on the list!

Let's legalize marijuana and ban alcohol.

I say legalize everything. Ban or place regulations marketing of troublesome substances. Tax. Use revenue to support addiction and awareness programs. Considering the sheer volume of consumption, the social programs I suspect will cost much less than the revenue. Sin taxes are popular and often aren't considered for cuts even by the most ardent anti-tax fanatics.

I do think such taxes are horribly regressive. But it's a bit of an idiot tax like the lottery.
