How will the confirmed existence of the Higgs boson benefit the human race in any way?

Rather than your asinine comparison to the US defense budget (the US isn't even funding this collider is it?) why don't you explain how this massive toy for physicists to play with will do more to advance "human progress" than, I dunno, something that would actually mitigate poverty and human suffering?

Without a firm understanding of physics, the last 100 years of technology would not have been possible... ******
To us, it is the BEAST.

LOL some discoveries in physics were useful therefore all discoveries are. That's not retarded at all.

The discovery of the higgs boson will allow to master control of gravity, which will allow us to build annihilation reactors which will provide enough energy for hundreds of Earths for billions of years, thus eliminating poverty for all time.

            Duh.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

That one's easy, it's because life exists to disappoint us and therefore real life lesbians are never hot.

Response to both of you is that there's more than one way to waste money.

If "discovering" a particle which scientists predicted the existence of requires building a $9 billion ****ing hula hoop then there cannot be any practical application to this knowledge. If at some point we do find a practical application then I guarantee it will be cheaper and more useful, and it would have the extra benefit of also confirming the existence of the Higgs boson.

Think about what this discovery means for science. It means that every particle in the standard model has been observed. That's not more useful to us than having observed all but one of them. Anything useful that we could possibly do that would depend on the existence of that one particle would result in its observation.

I don't think cheap energy will be sufficient to end poverty but other than that that does sound pretty awesome

Especially since we're probably talking about a hormone difference and understanding how hormones effect human weight gain is something likely to have broader implications as we learn more on the subject so please get over your own bigotry and prejudice on this matter.

We at least agree that knowing the fundamental make up of the universe in which we live is a worth while pursuit.
                  Jerk? Bigotry? Prejudiced?

                  Wow.

Simply a judgement decision on my part on allocation of funds. Would you feel the same if they sent you the bill? Perhaps you should look at your own prejudices before you point fingers.

In any event, I certainly respect your right to disagree with me and to support your own feelings of the merits of that particular research. I simply ask for the same right to feel as i do.

Further, I suppose that the name calling you use gives you a heightened sense of superiority in judging these things? From what do you derive such? Hard to say, but in the spirit of forum friendship I will refrain from saying that you act like a 10 year old at times.

Finally, I have no prejudice against gays or lesbians whatsoever...an assumption that you too easily made.

Well, I nominate you to decide which ones are useful and which ones aren't ahead of time.

Indeed it is useful to confirm the standard model. Many of the advances being made in electronics are being based on quantum principles. Not to mention that Mad Monk's rather flamboiant answer does have some vestiges in truth.

Oh, it will. After that first nanosecond, there won't be a poor person to be found anywhere.

Seriously, anything less than 8 figures in the federal budget isn't worth the time to argue, especially if it's health or science related.

There's more pure waste in the DoD budget alone every single day. 1.5 million in this study? That's about 45 minutes worth of USG procurement waste. The difference is that is money down a hole, except to the individual contractors. The NIH study has a significant chance of contributing to understanding of causes of obesity, which is on its way to becoming a public health disaster - or already is when you consider secondary effects such as diabetes prevalence. You're talking what, 0.8 cents per taxpayer for this study? Think about that magnitude and then think about how much time the conversation is worth on the scale of the overall spending of the government.

You may not have an issue with gays or lesbians, but think about why, out of over a million line items of federal spending each year, this particular study was singled out for attention in the press? Substitute lesbians for a race or religious group, and do you think it would draw the same scrutiny and ridicule?
