  • Why Can't I Delete Anything In Windows 8?

My C: drive can't delete anything. It's an SSD. I can't even drag things to trash anymore. It does the dialogue box showing I trashed something, but it never appears there. Whenever I use the uninstall function it tells me Windows couldn't delete it, and it may have already been removed. I mean I'm not saying I feel like I've been tricked into going into a gas chamber but right now Windows 8 feels like a gas chamber.

The NSA hasn't finished copying things over, give it a while.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

It's infuriating that there's no way to reset it without reinstalling Windows.

        I don't want Windows 8.

Thankfully an app called File Shredder helped me delete it. I have no clue how to explain this.

The Windows App version is a full screen app - the program can be run in desktop mode.

Be careful using programs like file shredder if you have an SSD, often these programs' default delete methods are to overwrite the data with multiple passes and this can degrade SSD performance. I use Eraser, whose default delete method is a 35-pass overwrite which would kill my SSD.

Use Eraser, and change the settings to use pseudorandom 1-pass for files and free space.

You can also use Delete Invalid File, I think its free trial is good for 30 days after which you should hopefully have Windows 8 working again.

If you're worried about security, your best bet is to encrypt your hard drive with Truecrypt, after which you don't need to worry about secure deletion.
