It would tend to keep random salesmen, Jehovah's Witnesses and greenpeace types from knocking at your door, though.

New drama is in fencing. The community mandates the chainlink fence along the back property line (it faces greenspace). Neighbour on on side already put up a standard 6ft fence. I went over to the other neighbour today to ask about what he would like for the fence, and he wants to do a completely different design than anyone has on either side of him (75% of houses have no fences as of yet). So he wants me to have one style fence on one side, one on the other... why can't he just make things simple?
In the end, I'm going to try to get him on board but I may just end up building the fence myself on my property line and piss him off. I don't want to have three types of fences in my backyard.

Casually pissing off neighbours is never a good idea. A good neighbour is worth their weight in gold, especially if renting the property out. They are your eyes and ears.
On fences, the rule in Australia, and probably the same in Canada as a common law country, is you pay half for whatever the council-mandated standard fence is and the one who wants the fancier fence pays the rest. That means getting two quotes.
Also putting a fence just inside your land can cause boundary disputes, which is exactly what a neighbour may bring on if you upset them. For example they could run a standard fence up along the boundary line and take you to council to pay half. My father has a situation somewhat like this, where a tenant in the house next door moved the fenceline and it is a major pain in the butt.
You really need to be careful with this stuff Asher I know because I own or have owned a lot of different properties.
I use pavers for my backyard patio. The only downside is weeds grow in the sand between the paving stones but a few sprays of Roundup take care of them.

There's no law here on paying for fencing - it's just considered good form to go half/half (I did with the neighbours on the original fence).
I'm trying to work with him, but he wants to put in a non-standard fence. He wants to put in some 4-foot fancy thing which is different from what the houses have going in either direction down the road. It's just a douche move to get some weird fence design that doesn't go with what everyone else has.
Trying to be reasonable here - we'll see if he comes around.

Sure Asher, the principle I suggested would still work - ask him to get a couple of quotes for chainlink and offer to pay half that amount, anything above that is his to pay.
Boundaries and fencing would have to be one of the most touchy subjects with neighbours, good luck with it
