Happy International Women's Day Ya'll.
By Michael Conzachi
On Thursday, Congress voted to reauthorize the Violence Against Women Act. While any type of intimate partner violence is deplored, this act, as it has been since its inception, has expanded definitions of domestic violence that codifies virtually any type of marital discord as domestic violence, while at the same time has virtually eliminated constitutional protections and due process guarantees.
As is usually the case, proponents of the act portray opposition as being anti-women. Nothing can be further from the truth. Opponents of the current Senate version actually wanted equality for all victims of intimate partner violence, not more and expanded protections for specific groups based on nothing more than gender, country of origin, sexual identity, or tribal affiliations. Opponents also wanted the return of the presumption of innocence, the restoration of constitutional rights and due process, the elimination of gender based discriminatory practices, and a viable system in place for accountability to reduce waste and fraud which is currently at epidemic levels.
Dr. Martin Feibert PhD, a Professor of Psychology at California State University at Long Beach has compiled a bibliography of over 300 research and scholarly articles and papers spanning a time period of over thirty years, which essentially concludes that intimate partner violence is perpetrated equaly among the sexes. The facts and evidence are staggering.
A national organization advocating for all victims of domestic violence and sexual assault; Stop Abusive and Violent Environments, has published a lengthy list of reports on the entire sphere of intimate partner violence and sexual assault that is based on fact, science, logic, and common sense; and not based on extremist gender ideology that we have been so accustomed to hearing. Others calling for reform include countless medical, psychological, legal, constitutional and judicial professionals and educators. The support for comprehensive reform spans all professions, and all groups and genders, including a number of women’s rights groups.
Based on the non-existence of the presumption of innocence, the constitutional and due process violations, the lack of accountability, the presence of gender based discriminatory practices, and the exceptionally high rates of fraud, waste and abuse are the reasons for the initial opposition to the current version of the act, not a delusional war on women. Sadly we have all been accustomed to the constant and repeated assertions of extremist rhetoric, rather than fact, science, logic, common sense, and intelligent debate.
The end result will yield the ongoing and continuing decimation of the family unit, the continuing erosion of constitutional protections and the continuing and preventable harm being inflicted upon our children.
