This is reportedly a "game changer" as it is only the second case ever where a human was infected with HIV but which is now HIV negative. Reportedly it is also a totally different set of circumstances than the first case of a child being cured of HIV. Doctors are excited because they hope this case will give them more clues about how to cure viral infections which previously could not be cured. The first child cured of HIV was a white child who had a special genetic immunity to viral infections (this genetic immunity is believed to be in ~3% of whites and was due to the horrible public health conditions found in Europe after the fall of the Roman Empire when Europe went from the large cities of the classical period to the dark ages) but unlike the first case this case involves a black child with no known genetic immunity, who previously tested positive for HIV (she got it at birth from her infected mother), but who now shows no HIV present proving that the virus is no longer replicating in her body.
So far it has only worked in infants but the hope is this cure might be able to cure adult humans as well. If that's true then it truly is a game changer.
