Oh my yes. Extremely fun pulp. I don't begrudge anyone their enjoyment of it; I love it myself, own all the books. But if Elok is looking for something a little challenging, than good old Harry Dresden is probably not the route I'd go down.

Were he just looking for a good time, it'd be one of the first things I'd suggest.

GW. GW is asserting a trademark they have no right to (they don't even _have_ the trademark, not to mention rights), and screwing a small author in the process. Amazon should probably behave better, but in the scheme of things, Amazon doesn't have a lot of incentive to do any different. An ebook that sells in the tens of copies isn't much to lose in exchange for not getting sued. (Not that it's truly a DMCA issue - so they ought to just ignore this - but this is one of those problems with being a big company.)

Either way, GW is being an ass (as they usually are - have you seen the dumb rules they have for selling their product?) and deserves my righteous indignation.

I'm rereading The Count of Monte Cristo right now. Been many years, but is equally entertaining as the first time. Doesn't sound like the genre that you may be looking for, but a nice classic suggestion I hope.

First read CoMC in eighth grade. I loved it then, but I re-read it recently and it doesn't hold up as well now that I'm an adult for some reason. Three Musketeers still works for me, though.

BTW, Guy, you damn well better have seen Machete by now. It's been like three years since I told you to.

I've been a Christopher Moore fan since Practical Demonkeeping. I particularly liked Lamb, Fool, and A Dirty Job, but all of his books are fun.

                As far as classics....

Bujold's Paladin series is really good, I like it even better than Miles.

Cherryh's Paladin, Gate of Ivrel, Cyteen, the Wave without Shore collection and Downbelow Station are all really good. Really, everything is good, and most everything but the series she has been writing recently (Foreigner+ and Fortress+) is really good.

Gene Wolf is fantastic, anything (he is even better than Cherryh), but you can do "The book fo the New Sun".

I really liked Mordant's Need, and it doesn't contain as terrible of protagonist as Donaldson's best known work.

Steven Brust writes fun action fantasy.

I always recommend Cherryh, she is one of my favorites.

Anathem was actually good. I thought it was maybe the best he wrote.

I like some and don't like others.

                  The count I like are:
                  Snow Crash
                  The Diamond Age
                  Anathem

                  I haven't read all.

Some books I have read recently that I liked (first book in the case of a series):
                  The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms
-- Epic fantasy, with both very big scope and narrow scope...
Sun of suns: Book one of Virga
                  -- Interesting world
                  The Quantum Thief
-- Recommended, not an easy read
                  Sabriel
                  -- YA, quick easy read
                  His Majesty's Dragon
                  -- Horatio with dragons
                  Under Heaven
-- Basically a fantastic story of the Tang Dynasty (Chinese)
Luck in the Shadows: Nightrunners book 1
-- Mystery, Duo, adventurers, being made into a movie (gay)
                  The Clockwork Rocket
                  -- Cool idea
Acacia: The war with the Mein
-- Epic fantasy, gritty, a bit dark, think "A Song of Ice and Fire", heavy
                  The Thief
-- YA, probably the best YA I have read since Harry Potter (oldest book on the list, I think)

Why not just download the books you want? I can recommend some sites that have an excellent selection of fantasy novels about pyrokinetics and Detroit.

If you're looking for a seriously nerdy (but good!) book, read Larry Niven's The Integral Trees. And its sequel The Smoke Ring.

                          Also an outstanding suggestion.

I would slot in Coyote Blue in place of Fool for my personal Christopher Moore Top 3, but Fool would be in the next tier along with his latest, Sacre Bleu.

Extremely funny writer, but also hits some emotional high points in many of his novels, especially the aforementioned.

Also, one can not go wrong with Elmore Leonard.

                            1. Kiss my ass. Besides, she's now writing about the Amish trying to survive a biologic apocalypse.

                            2. A second vote for one of JM's suggestions, Under Heaven by Guy Gavriel Kay. It takes place in a fictionalized medieval China-like country. Beautiful, beautiful novel. This one might be my favorite non-Stephenson novel listed on this thread, even better than my beloved Christopher Moore.

That sounds cool. I have a friend who loves Amish stuff and will recommend it when it comes out. Recommend to purchase.
