Soon I will be leaving sunny Thailand with my new duelling scar for the trip back to my Americanised island home, or Hooterville as I like to call it.
The older boys leave tonight for Sydney. Aidan gets his university offers today. We have a night in Guam and then Pat our youngest goes back to Sydney with his Mom escorting, four days after we get back, to start boarding school.
After that Mrs Horse and I will start our second honeymoon. No children around after 20 years. One thing this holiday showed is we like being together. Travelling with them is like being followed around by a troop of squabbling monkeys. There won't be too many more family holidays with us all together. Have to wait for the grandchildren.
I'll know my holiday is over as soon as I get on that United Airlines flight. The Tokyo leg will be an old jumbo, then a large 737 to Guam and then a small 737 to home. The first flight will be crowded and leaves very early AM. The second will be a rush to make, only two hours in Narita. The third, the famous island hopper from Guam to Hawaii, will be the usual flying village with terrible service and food. But strangely also enjoyable in its way. Everyone has to use that plane so you meet people you know, the flight is one of the main conduits for island news, the coconut telegraph.
When the island comes into view I'll be happy. It looks a bit like the island on Lost - jungle, mountains and waterfalls. I'm always glad to get back there. If it rains when you arrive that is the island spirits' way of welcoming you.
