  • The Walking Dead

Why even make movies and tv shows anymore when video games are finally having stories up to par with them with the added emotional investment in characters brought on by player interaction in the story world?

    The Walking Dead

I also love the break from the FPS model of narrative games.

      Maybe better than Civ IV.

Video game stories used to suck; B-movie fare, at best, but in the last 2-3 years, they've taken a leap forward. Even this year's Call of Duty finally had a passable story with a sympathetic villain, incredible given how terrible the writing has been in the past 8 COD's. Previously, LA Noire and Mafia II took my vote for best video game stories, dialogue, and believable CGI acting. The Walking Dead, however, is legitimately better than most movies that I've seen.

The interactivity gives games a potential well beyond film media. You actually have emotional investment in the characters that you don't have being a passive viewer of a movie.

The Walking Dead TV show has a LOT of emotional investment. Cartoon characters in a game don't give me any emotional investment.

Exactly. I'm a fan of the show, and I'm going to start reading the comic series soon, as what I've flipped through in some of the issues in stores has me hooked. The show or the comics can be emotionally gripping.

Waiting for one of the critics in this thread to say they actually played the full first season of Walking Dead before they criticize my assessment.

I went and googled The Walking Dead game and so far, I'm not impressed from what I read on wiki, and on another site.

I read the spoilers in wiki - the game will end the same, no matter what choices you make. The only thing your choices do, is simply take you on an alternate path to the same ending.

What I would LOVE to see, is a company produce a MMOP game along lines of World of Warcraft, Guild Wars, and so on. But make the MMOP game of The Walking Dead much, much better, with more depth and more dynamism than WoW, Guild Wars, or the other MMOP games out there.

The best way to make a MMOP game of The Walking Dead, is to set up the game world to cover more than just Georgia - in fact, when creating a character, give the player several choices in which part of the world they want to begin playing - whether somewhere in America, somewhere in Europe, or elsewhere. Make it a true, open world where you're not confined to the area you chose to start in.

None of the zombies seem to live long enough for me to develop an emotional attachment to them ... MMO's are much better at this. In Everquest I remember crying my eyes out when they moved the spawn for my favorite drake to a less exploitable location. I had met that drake at that spot every hour on the hour for weeks on end. Oh the memories of standing in a glitchy wall and collecting phat loots! Gaming was ruined for me that day ... DAMN YOU SONY ENTERTAINMENT, DAMN YOU!

MMO's have no ****ing story! It's impossible to write a story for an open world MMO. And the entire genre sucks to begin with. Because repetitive grind against the AI to level up and collect **** is oh so fun

The differences in the journey with the same ending matter! That's the appeal of the game in that in your playthrough, Lee's relationship with Kenny may be completely different than in mine.

I've played it, and I agree with you.

It is, EASILY, the best iteration of The Walking Dead franchise to date, including TV, comics, and novels. I am a 34 year old man with a professional degree, and the ending of the game had me crying like a little ****ing baby.

Wrong. MMOs CAN have a storyline; it's just a player's choice if they want to play following the storyline, or not.

And as far as the repititive grinding you mentioned, that's why I already said a MMO for The Walking Dead needs to be much better than other MMO games out there.

And I still don't understand how choices you make in the game are so interesting if they lead to the same ending.

Thanks for your lame attempt at your sarcastic jibe at my post.

I wasn't saying in a good MMO for The Walking Dead that you'd develop an emotional attachment with the zombies. You'd have a chance to develop an emotional investment in your character and others you interact with.

You've obviously never had a spawn point so close to your heart nerfed, and so I'll forgive you for misreading my post as having anything to do with you or your post.

Even if that is the case, the second half of season 3 starts next month, when does the next game come out? Or does it?

THAT is why games aren't better.

Besides, I didn't see anywhere that Alby said he watched the show, so it goes both ways.

I have a friend who is a huge Walking Dead (the show) fan. But he hated the game. Didn't get past the demo which is the start of episode 1. He's always playing Call of Duty Zombies, Left 4 Dead, Dead Island, etc., too, but he says he doesn't understand the game mechanics of Walking Dead.

I hate how the FPS model dominates narrative gaming. They always devolve into nothing but shooting 100's of enemies.
