Reg, I think you can actually set it to "promiscuous mode" and then it can. By default it does not. Been a while since I've used it though.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Out of curiosity, if given a diagram of a bunch of switches and hubs and the propagation times on each network segment could you figure out what ports would get blocked on STP?

That's a basic test of routing and switching knowledge and I admit it's not super relevant to home networks which usually only have one switch but please don't pontificate about your vast knowledge if you can't do this. If you can do this I apologize.

Not on wireless. Maybe it can with some adapters but on Windows, with the vast majority of popular chips, it can't.

Hm, maybe you have to patch it. I'm pretty sure software that does that is considered illegal in the US.

Do I look like a community college IT guy to you?

              I don't do **** like that. It doesn't matter.

You can absolutely, definitely do it...

Wouldn't know about that. What I do know is that in the RIT networking & system administration department we use a different piece of software (forget the name) for sniffing wireless packets.

                  (xpost @HC)

You look like someone who's pretending to be a 1337 netadmin or whatever when you're just some software engineer with only vague understanding of wireless security and networking in general.

What is your platform? The machines at RIT with wireshark cannot do it.

I'm someone who is telling you what I spend today doing and learning. I don't pretend to be a 1337 netadmin because such people do not exist. Network administrators are pretty low on the totem pole.

I didn't use wireshark for that.

Um, so what makes you think that wireshark can sniff wireless traffic promiscuously?

That seriously depends on the size and complexity network they are administrating and the number of people they are managing. Most programmers are pretty low on the totem pole.

You said it didn't work on wireless interfaces. It does.

If it didn't work on wireless interfaces, it wouldn't have a dedicated wireless toolbar.
