  • Man On The Moon

Finally got around to watching the movie "The Man On The Moon" - recounting the life and times of performance artist Andy Kaufman. I was a big fan.

Pretty amazing story. Very sad ending.

Kaufman was a satirist and performance artist who plied his trade on comedy shows (notably Saturday Night Live and early Letterman shows). He described himself in a NY Times interview:

"I am not a comic, I have never told a joke...The comedian's promise is that he will go out there and make you laugh with him...My only promise is that I will try to entertain you as best I can....They say, 'Oh wow, Andy Kaufman, he's a really funny guy.' But I'm not trying to be funny. I just want to play with their heads."
Kaufman died in 1984 from an aggressive and rare form of lung cancer, which he kept secret after being diagnosed. He had such a long history of elaborate charades that blurred the line between his life and art that few realized his condition. As a result, many were convinced that he had staged his death as an elaborate piece of performance art. (He had actually talked about staging his own death as a performance piece years earlier.) In terms of performance art, that might be considered a triumph, but that fact is that Kaufman died tragically young (35) and mostly alone.
