  • Boeing successfully tests non-nuclear EMP device

Heard about it first on the radio, they said it also knocked out reporters' cameras.

    CHAMP - lights out

A recent weapons flight test in the Utah desert may change future warfare after the missile successfully defeated electronic targets with little to no collateral damage.

Boeing and the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) Directed Energy Directorate, Kirtland Air Force Base, N.M., successfully tested the Counter-electronics High-powered Microwave Advanced Missile Project (CHAMP) during a flight over the Utah Test and Training Range.

CHAMP, which renders electronic targets useless, is a non-kinetic alternative to traditional explosive weapons that use the energy of motion to defeat a target.

Power is cut to a room of computers after being hit by a high-powered microwave pulse from a Counter-electronics High-powered Advanced Missile Project.

During the test, the CHAMP missile navigated a pre-programmed flight plan and emitted bursts of high-powered energy, effectively knocking out the target's data and electronic subsystems. CHAMP allows for selective high-frequency radio wave strikes against numerous targets during a single mission.

"This technology marks a new era in modern-day warfare," said Keith Coleman, CHAMP program manager for Boeing Phantom Works. "In the near future, this technology may be used to render an enemy’s electronic and data systems useless even before the first troops or aircraft arrive."

...and in other news, it has been found that new, galvanized steel trash cans can make fine Faraday cages. Use aluminum foil if necessary for a gasket, and put a battery operated radio turned up high into the can; if it goes silent when you put the lid on, your job is done!

Building a NNEMP is not very difficult. I could do it with a copper tube, some solid rocket fuel, a capacitor, and some wire. The problem is that getting a really big one requires multiple stages.

You can get solid rocket fuel at the local 7-11.

A Faraday cage kinda defeats the purpose of a radio. We still use wired analogue phones in the army, so CHAMP is not so dangerous for us.

The radio is there only to test the integrity of the cage; the cage is for laptops, cameras, storage devices, spare computer modules for your vehicle, etc.

Ever heard of a SCIF? Anyway, this is really a battlefield weapon. Hard to fight a battle from inside a Faraday cage.

That's okay, the Russian Army pretty much defeats itself already unless it's attacking small countries that can't fight back.
If there is no sound in space, how come you can hear the lasers?

Only the electronics need to be in a Faraday cage.

They've had non-nuclear EMP devices for decades. Hell, they've even featured them in some movies like Ocean's 11.

Society would go down so quick if a terrorist blew up an EMP. We rely too much on electricity.

HC has consistently demonstrated that he never knows what he's talking about. Ask him about Chinese aircraft carriers.

Yeah how about the '90s when nobody was getting paid. Or now when they create all-volunteer units and fill them with conscripts because nobody is willing to deal with the corrupt officers that steal their pay and horrible NCOs that haze them and torment them.

The Chinese aircraft carrier is, currently, totally worthless. It would be of approximately zero use to China in a shooting war. It takes a long time to figure out procedures for operating aircraft off of ships. The Chinese don't currently know how to do that, and right now their energy is focused on developing carrier doctrine so that whatever they call ex-Varyag isn't just so much worthless floating steel.
