  • Motor Trend names Tesla Model S car of the year.

It's the first electric car to ever get such an honor from one of the major trade publications. It really does look like Tesla is a class act in the auto business and I'm sure the investments from Toyota and Mercedes are helping it along. A new American auto maker.

Motor Trend Names Tesla S Car Of The Year, First Electric Car To Receive Honor

Motor Trend named Tesla's Model S as its Car of the Year. It is the first time in the award's 64-year history the honor goes to a car without an internal combustion engine.
"The Tesla Model S floored our panel of judges," Edward Loh, Editor-in-Chief of Motor Trend said in a press release. "The goal of the award is to name the car that best meets our six criteria, and the Tesla Model S accomplished that best. It is a testament not only to the luxury sedan and electric car segment, but to American engineering overall."
Loh stars in a video introducing the Tesla. It shows an elegant sedan that he says runs as "smooth and effortless as a Rolls Royce." It shows off the 17-inch center-console touch screen and the powerful engine that can do zero-to-60 in 3.9 seconds.

Loh says that he drove from Los Angeles to Las Vegas and back — 212 miles — on a single charge.
If you're thinking that the Model S sounds like your kind of car, the price tag is just as stunning: Depending on battery options and upgrades the car runs from $49,900 to $97,900.
If you remember, Tesla became a subject in the presidential race when Gov. Mitt Romney accused President Obama of backing "losers" like Tesla and Solyndra.
Fox News reports that during the celebration of the Motor Trend honor, Tesla CEO Elon Musk made reference to the Romney quip.
    Fox reports:
"Musk contrasted the Model S, the winner of the award, to the "loser" remark made during the campaign—by parsing the comment grammatically.
"Mr. Romney, he suggested, had gotten "the object, but not the subject" of the remark right.
"A standing-room-only crowd of Tesla owners and depositors laughed and cheered his comment."

This is the first time in the award's 64-year history that the honor goes to a car without an internal combustion engine. The magazine said the Model S is a testament to the greatness of American engineering.

The Motor Trend video is kind of cool too. It explains their choice, tells use why, and has some great shots of the car. They drove it from LA to Vegas and back on a single charge. That's pretty good.

L.A. to Vegas on a single charge is good? It's good for driving around a city.

212 miles in a high performance all-electric design is, in fact, pretty impressive.

Saw one parked in downtown Chicago recently and it is gorgeous, inside and out. Made me wonder what the battery performance is like in winter temperatures...

Some people buy cars based on what they say about the owner. A Porsche says "Envy me for you are poor and I am a wealthy mother****er." A Prius says "I care about the environment in a vague detached sense." A Tesla says both of these things, for the price of...well, more than both combined actually, but says both at the same time!

I usually get about 200 miles on a tank so I guess that's not too bad. Of course you can generally find a gas station at least once every 200 miles, not so sure about a kajillion watt wall outlet.

The next car to be released is a cross over vehicle called the Model X which will be built on the Model S's platform. Personally, I think there is room for niche automakers on the high end where several European niche makers survive.

31 miles of range on a one hour charge from a 240v outlet.

A gallon of gas is cheaper.

I could see this working if it had a mobile generator pulled in a trailer from the rear.
                        BUT
The generator and amount of fuel needed, trailer would have to be very big.

Let's say it draws 40 amps (probably a wild overestimate) from 240v, or 9600 w (round to 10 kW). So 10 kWh costs you $3-$4? Sucks to be you, man, I get my electricity for like $0.15/kWh...

TeslaRumors: Map of residential energy costs in the USA sorted by State with estimated cost per mile for the Tesla Motors Model S

There you go. $10 and change in Illinois gets you 300 miles. Compare that to even a Prius, which uses 8 gallons of gas for those 300 miles, at a cost of $28 and change right now in the suburbs, and my Subaru Forester (realistic city, 22MPG) which costs around $50.

And that's with a pretty un-improved engine - MPG is where it is only because of decades of incremental improvements. I'll take electric any day if they can get enough stations to charge it, and drop the price... which is just a matter of (possibly a good deal of) time.
