I am not a doctor, but you have several indications of obstructive sleep apnia. You should bring this up with your MD.

I have had it for my whole life since I was a juvenile, as far as I can tell. It was only when I shared quarters with a person who is a professional in healthcare that I was made aware that I frequently stopped breathing and needed to get the condition checked out.

It slowly kills you due to lack of oxygen while you sleep and the effects of that on the heart and the rest of the body.

My first roommate had that, though it was because he was like 280 lbs

Any way, back to dietary changes. I'm sure this is more of a fad diet than a true life style change but to help lose weight and get more fruits and veggies down my gullet I've spent the last week on a fruit/veggie smoothy diet. You have a home made smoothy for breakfast and lunch then eat a sensible and well balanced dinner. There are several different recipes for the smoothies but things like spinach, broccoli, oranges, avocados, strawberries, and blueberries seem to feature prominently. I'm hoping if I keep it up for a few months this will result in some positive changes to my health.

BTW, HBP is one of them.

Getting the sleep apnia addressed was important in my lowering my BP without medication (so far).

This sounds like a good candidate for why my blood pressure (even just two years ago it was 125 over 82) went up so high so fast. The more I read the more it sounds like exactly what I have.

This might sound too simple, but the best/quickest way to get your blood pressure down is to donate blood. Blood pressure goes down, then over the next few weeks goes up again. Then you donate blood again. No pills. No lifestyle (diet/exercise) change... and you might accidentally save a life.

The funny thing is I was trying to donate blood (I usually do it once a year at the company's annual blood drive) but got rejected for the first time ever because they said my blood pressure was too high. I remember last year my blood pressure was 150-160 which is high but not alarmingly so while this year they called an ambulance to take me to an emergency room even though I felt fine. It was honestly the first time I'd been in an ambulance or been a patient in a hospital.

Well, if they allow you to donate again, do so every 2-3 months. You will probably be surprised at the results.

That is a lie. You need to go to a donation clinic, so it's not quick.

There are relatively simple tests for it.

I went to a clinic and they gave me an apparatus to take home. It measured breathing, heart rate, and blood oxygen level for one night while I slept. A doctor then did an assessment from the gathered data.

The next step was getting a CPAP and getting used to it. That's a trick. It seals around the nose and creates positive pressure while you sleep. If you get a good one it will adjust on the fly. If you are breathing normally it does very little other than create some pressure to keep the airway open. If it senses a stoppage it ramps up to force you to breathe. During normal sleep it is very quiet.

When my roommate was on his CPAP he didn't snore at all but he would often fall asleep at his desk because if I didn't prompt him to go to bed he wouldn't go to bed, and in those cases he snored really loudly.

Then when he went home over winter break he gained a ton more weight and the pressure on his CPAP had to be increased so that actually made a slight hissing noise as it leaked out of the mask.

'Bleeding' also works... a reason that men usually have higher blood pressure than women.

They can be pretty complicated, and can be manual or automatic in adjustments. The better ones you set a range and it will adjust itself while you sleep and record breathing data. There are ones that come with humidification, and there are ones that are more or less quiet.

Getting used to having the breathing mask is the hard part. There are a variety of them though. I started with the preferred nasal plugs and had to go to a larger mask then was able to switch back to the plugs. Many people fail to get used to them. It takes effort and persistence. Napping with it on helped me a lot.

He had to take his in somewhere, like the doctor or something, to get it adjusted (or so he said). His had a humidifier; he kept distilled water around to fill it. Apparently if he used other stuff it would gum up the works. There were a few occasions where I had to run to the grocery store to get more distilled water for him.
