It's Obama's comeback. They're already saying it and I haven't checked what MSNBC is saying. Ed Schultz is probably creaming his pants right now and Rachel Maddow is... I don't want to know what she's doing.

Also, while Biden has a reputation for gaffes, he also has a reputation for "connecting with voters". If the media starts commenting on how rude he was (and he was rather shockingly rude), then that impression will go away as well, for whatever it's worth.

Yep. And I bet the Obama campaign were happy to help lower the expectations for Biden, so that he could beat them and it would seem like a major victory.

No one is going to consider this a major victory.

What does momentum even mean in a political context? I've heard it a lot and don't really get the metaphor.

Yep. Andrew Sullivan, lately known for screaming his head off that Obama was blowing it (really, look at his blog the past week) is very pleased with Biden's performance.

Basic idea is there's a herd mentality among voters. They see other excited voters and they get excited, leading to "momentum" where polling keeps increasing as more people in that party get engaged. You see it a lot more in primaries than in the general, but it still exists near the end of the election. More engaged = more likely to turn out and vote = better chances of winning.

I think he'd have been pleased that Biden didn't poo himself while talking about hygienic Obama was.

More CNN polling: 53% say Ryan was more likeable, 42% say Biden. 57% say Ryan more ready to be president. More in touch with your problems: Ryan 51%, Biden 44%.

Biden's giggling is going to make for some good campaign ads. Works a lot better than Big Bird or Obama's smirks.

                          Turned on MSNBC...

Chris Matthews is such a partisan hack.

Some people just can't take their eyes off of Biden even when Ryan is speaking.

Chris Matthews said Ryan should have been wearing a clown hat and some other dude was saying how he 'loved' Biden's response to Ryan's 47% response. MSNBC is crazy partisan.

Even if this turns out well for biden it is also good for Ryan long-term, especially if Romney loses. He managed to appear presidential and knowledgeable--no one can discredit him with this debate. So he can remain the ideological standard-bearer of the Republican party.
