I think Classic is the only way to play, but it's a bit too unforgiving. I'm all about a tactical challenge, but a terror mission with 6 Chryssalids, 3 Mutons, 3 Sectoids and 3 Thin Men all at once, plus 18 civilians ready to be zombified, is not winnable. Bugging out increases panic far too high.

The trick is to not trigger multiple groups of aliens at once if at all possible. Sometimes it's not really possible. The lead designer mentioned post-release that they might lower the difficulty in a patch.

I started over after my disaster yesterday and the initial missions are way harder than last time. I think the game is trying to get back the three soldiers I didn't lose this time around because I skipped the tutorial.

The losses in the game are probably more realistic of what would happen during an actual alien invasion. However, the whole thing is just more stupid human propaganda.

Now that I've beaten the game I'm screwing around in my save. Currently trying to get the mind control an ethereal achievement.

Part of the reason I'm not having a lot of trouble is that I relentlessly save. However, if you're not good that will get maddeningly frustrating. I drop it down to normal for the tyrannids...I mean chrysalids.

I did beat a couple terror missions on classic, but I used some SHIVs, which I consider disposable.

BUT, you can't actually use that weaponry until you research it yourself, yes?
Pretty sure thats the Case. I captured my second Sectoid Commander, got a light plasma gun but no new Research options. On the Plus Side it now sits in the Interrogation Chamber and stares menacely at me. ( The Alien, not the Gun)

                    • This is THE game I've been waiting for! Haven't actually bought it yet due to not having time to play it, but I'll get around to it. I'll call in few sick days if nothing else works. This is the only game that still captures my attention, if I played the original one. And checking out trailers and a bit of game play.. I'm excited!!!! Thank you Firaxis! Now go ahead and make 5 more, you know old farts will be buying and they've got the cash, too.

                      • I just epically failed at a rescue mission. Successfully defended the VIP and had him like two turns away from the extraction point with no enemies in sight. Had him hunker down in the middle of a ring of my guys, next to one of the myriad pieces of flaming cover in this ruined highway map. Turns out I had put him right next to a burning car, which promptly exploded and ended my VIP rescue.

                        • Yes, that happened to me too. Damn exploding cars. I didn't realize they exploded until one took out five of my guys at once. Loaded a save.

                          • The funniest part about this is that I already knew to stay away from burning vehicles. I just didn't recognize the danger this time since half the map was on fire and I was concentrating on what the best piece of cover would be.

                            • I was afraid that was going to happen to my colonel sniper in my last mission, I hadn't even realized his cover was on fire until after I had him waste a Muton across the map; luckily, it appeared that the car had already burnt out.

Or could I enjoy it on a 13" macbook [with windows installed via bootcamp]? Usually 13" is a bit small for games like that, but if it's manageable I might try it there.

Dude, you can buy a new laptop for like $300-$400 and have it actually be a pretty good laptop.
