  • Sign of the times: Canada holds free vote on abortion rights...

And it's a footnote in newspapers with the exception of one thing: Outrage that one of the cabinet ministers - one specifically in a position of defending women's rights - voted in favour of a bill to study "when life begins".

Life began billions of years ago. Case dismissed.

Wrong. It began only a few thousand years ago according to the Bible.

I can't find much information on this, except from Catholic new sources. Apparently, "the motion would have set up a Parliamentary Committee to examine the definition of a human being found in the subsection in light of the latest medical and scientific evidence." Is that accurate? And if it is accurate, what's the rationale for rejecting it? Am I to believe that the members who voted no were strict fiscal conservatives, who didn't want to waste taxpayer money on a Parliamentary Committee?
        John Brown did nothing wrong.

It's that, and it's also the fact that Canada is done with this issue. The people who keep bringing it up are viewed as religious nuts who won't let the issue go to focus on more important issues.

Also, most people realize a political committee is not the best group to decide a philosophical question such as "when does life begin"?

Canada, a country which respects freedom and rights for its citizens, errs on the side of not legislating morality when there is nowhere near consensus.

I view the balancing of rights and responsibilities in this issue differently, of course. But since I'm not Canadian, my views are irrelevant.

Canada was way ahead of America there, too.

We err on the side of not infringing the rights of others.

That's why we didn't have slaves while you did.

                        Begging the question.

But there wasn't a consensus on whether slaves had rights!

Was there a consensus on whether they were people?
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.

Taney held in Dred Scott that they were "so far inferior that they had no rights which the white man was bound to respect."

More germane to this thread in particular, lynchings were obviously not fairly prosecuted.

So I'd say that for the purposes of this discussion, the answer is probably "no."
